Cell Structure & Function

Investigate the wonderful world of cells, their structure and function, in detail and close up through multiple pathways in this CD-ROM.

Explore A Simple Cell , the interactive virtual cell (both plant and animal) that features in-depth text information and includes 3D models, high-powered microscope images, illustrations, movies and animations.

Through the Cell Viewer, high quality images of organelles can be examined focusing on the four most commonly studied examples in high school biology classes; elodea, E. coli, onion, and epithelial cells are all virtually viewed through microscopes (such as electron and confocal microscopes) that are not generally accessible in science classrooms.

Handles investigate cells through topics of interest to students. Looking at pimples, understanding the impact of drugs like nicotine, alcohol and antibiotics on cells, finding out about cancer or the effect of steroids, all make the cellular world a reality for students. Students also investigate the world of the microscope, unravel the cell theory, and conduct ethical investigations.

Cellular Challenges provides a unique assessment component in the BioScope Quiz Show. Quizzes can also be modified to suit individual class needs. And Build A Cell will reinforce a student's understanding of organelles.

A comprehensive Teacher Resource section includes the user manual, link to national science content standards, concept map, and downloadable activity pages. Additional support material, including more activity pages and further complementary websites, is accessible with Internet connection through the evergreen Bioscope World.

Discover the world of microscopes, the principles of microscopy, the types of microscopes; microscope history; and how microscope slides are made. The cell cycle is graphically explained in a comprehensive animation; comparative images show normal and cancerous cells; the preparation of an onion skin slide is shown in a movie; animations explain the formation and healing of a bruise or sprained knee; and 'Dribbles' provides an interactive simulation of the human body's reaction to alcohol.

Many pages contain links to external websites, narration of terms and other text, stunning illustrations, animations and movies, links to detailed glossary definitions and knowledge pages. From the site index the user is able to print all the images for independent use.

As students progress through the CD-ROM they will better understand the world of cells, their structure and function, and how cells are part of their daily lives. Just watch reactions to a pimple being popped!
